Many of the materials in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) collections can be reproduced through the use of our public scanner, your personal camera or phone, or through hiring the services of SCUA or Preservation staff. Read our reproductions and use policy and fee schedule

Iowa State University does not own the copyright of all materials. Understanding and fulfilling copyright obligations is your responsibility.

Please don't forget to properly cite all SCUA materials.

Researcher reproductions

Researchers can create reproductions of SCUA materials in accordance with SCUA's reproductions and use policy and fee schedule and United States Copyright Law using their personal cameras, mobile phones, or the walk-up overhead scanner in SCUA's reading room available for scanning to email or USB drive. Personal scanners are not allowed.

  • Protective enclosures may not be removed.
  • Researcher reproductions may be restricted due to the condition and size (up to 18" x 25") of the items.
  • SCUA staff may provide handling and copying instructions to ensure item safety.

If you intend to use any item for publication (including use in social media, website, presentation, etc.), a request to publish form (PDF) must be completed and signed by both parties. The proper credit line will be provided, and its use in all publications is required. The publishing party assumes all responsibility for obtaining the appropriate copyright permission.
